The Abbey Hotel is a small eight-bed hotel above a pub directly opposite the gatehouse to Battle Abbey.
The hotel’s eight guest rooms have comfortable bedding, a small desk, a small flatscreen television and en suite bathrooms with bathrobes. Accommodation prices include a complimentary breakfast. Although the rooms are decorated to fit in with the historic nature of the listed building, the decor uses a contemporary colour scheme so it does not look dated at all.
The hotel and pub are run by Shepherd Neame, which is Britain’s oldest brewery. Although the accommodation upstairs is quite nice, if not a little pricey, the management hasn’t neglected the pub. The pub has quite a good atmosphere and an outdoor patio area, which is lovely on a sunny day.
The pub serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and they are noted for their ploughman’s lunch, which they advertise as the best in Sussex. It is a tad expensive for lunch in a small-town pub and some customers report that food service can be a little slow at busy times.
It is a beautiful Grade II listed building in a prime location directly opposite the entrance to Battle Abbey. The abbey is only a one-minute walk and Battle Museum is a four-minute walk away.
Buses stop outside the hotel. This includes both local buses to nearby towns, including Hastings, and also National Express coaches. Battle railway station is around a 12-minute walk from the hotel.
