Although Cumbria is a largely rural county, it is one of England’s most visited, with people coming for the fabulous Lake District National Park.
The most scenic of England’s national parks is popular with both locals and international visitors. It is famed for its lakes, which are visited by thousands of tourists, most of whom stay in the cluster of towns that include Ambleside, Coniston, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Keswick and Windermere but you can escape the crowds if you venture away from this area to lakes such as Buttermere, Crummock Water and Wastwater.
Places to visit in Cumbria outside the national park include Carlisle and Kendal.
