Blackpool Tower Dungeon

The Blackpool Tower Dungeon is part of the wider Dungeon series of attractions found in cities across the UK and Europe. The concept originated with the London Dungeon in 1974, which sought to present history in a way that was both educational and entertaining, using elements of horror to engage visitors. Following the success of similar attractions in London, York and Edinburgh, the Blackpool Tower Dungeon opened in 2011.

It is a tacky tourist trap which appeals mainly to the narrow 12–16-year-old demographic and anyone younger will find the topics a little too frightening and the crass and tasteless production values feel a little immature to anyone older. While the Blackpool Tower Dungeon is a tasteless tourist trap, it fits in with the overall vibe of Blackpool and, in comparison with other attractions in the town, it doesn’t seem too bad.

What to see at the Blackpool Tower Dungeon

A visit to the Blackpool Tower Dungeon is a fully immersive experience, with costumed actors, themed sets and atmospheric lighting creating an eerie and thrilling environment. The Dungeon features a variety of shows and performances, each focusing on different historical events and figures.

One of the highlights is the Dark Chapel, where guests are led into a Gothic church setting to witness a chilling story about the infamous Pendle Witch Trials, which took place in Lancashire in the early 17th century. Another popular show, The Torturer’s Chamber, gives visitors a grim look at medieval methods of punishment and execution, with actors bringing the scenes to life through interactive performances.

The Dungeon also explores the notorious crimes of highwaymen in The Highwayman, where visitors are thrust into an encounter with a dangerous robber lurking in the dark woods. The show combines historical context with engaging performances to illustrate the perils of travel in the 18th century.

In addition to the live performances, the Dungeon features a 7.9m (26ft) drop ride known as Drop Dead, which is supposed to simulate the feeling of being sentenced to hang.

Visiting the Blackpool Tower Dungeon

The Blackpool Tower Dungeon is in the Blackpool Tower complex on the Promenade, meaning that it is very close to other popular attractions such as Blackpool Tower Circus and the Tower Ballroom.

The Dungeon is a fully accessible attraction, with lifts and ramps available throughout the site for visitors with mobility impairments. However, the drop ride has some restrictions in terms of height and accessibility, so visitors are encouraged to review the guidelines before arrival.

Due to the nature of the attraction, the Blackpool Tower Dungeon may not be suitable for young children or those who are easily frightened. While humour is used to lighten the atmosphere, the experience can be intense at times. It is best suited for families with older children.

A visit should take a little under an hour.
