The Blue Reef Aquarium in Portsmouth is a coastal attraction showcasing a variety of marine life from British waters and beyond. Located on Clarence Esplanade near Southsea Beach, the aquarium offers visitors an opportunity to learn about ocean ecosystems and conservation efforts.
Opened in 2002, the aquarium has exhibits that focus on both local marine life and exotic species, emphasising the impact of human activity on the world’s oceans.

What to see at the Blue Reef Aquarium
The aquarium houses a range of exhibits featuring marine creatures from different environments. Local species from the Solent and British coastal waters are displayed alongside tropical fish, sharks, and reptiles. A highlight is the underwater tunnel, where visitors can walk through a glass tunnel surrounded by a tropical reef display. This exhibit provides close-up views of colourful fish, rays and other aquatic species.
Other areas include the freshwater display, home to amphibians and fish from rivers and lakes, and a section dedicated to marine conservation. The aquarium also has enclosures for otters and reptiles, offering insight into different aquatic habitats. Regular feeding sessions and talks take place throughout the day, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the animals.
Visiting the Blue Reef Aquarium
The aquarium is on Clarence Esplanade, not far from the D-Day Story and Southsea Castle. It is 2.4km (1½ miles) south of the city centre, which is around a half-hour walk away.
The aquarium is open year round.
