Borough Market is one of London’s largest food markets with lots of excellent food stalls. It is mainly a fruit and vegetable market although Britain’s recent food obsession has seen a plethora of new stalls selling speciality food and its exposure by British celebrity chefs have made Borough Market a fashionable place to shop. The market also has a large number of stalls selling ready-to-eat food, which makes it a good place to visit during lunchtime.
Several films have been filmed here, including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Borough Market operates Monday to Saturday, although not all traders operate on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Celia Brooks runs excellent three-hour gastro tours of Borough Market which include tastings of many of the market’s unique foods.
It is located just south of London Bridge, within walking distance to the City of London.
Other attractions nearby include Southwark Cathedral, the Golden Hinde, the Clink Prison Museum, the London Bridge Experience, the Old Operating Theatre Museum and the View from the Shard.
