Brasenose College, formally The King’s Hall and College of Brasenose, is one of the University of Oxford’s 38 constituent colleges. It was founded in 1509 and includes buildings added in the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Former students at Brasenose include comedian and former member of Monty Python Michael Palin; founder of the Ashmolean Museum, Elias Ashmole; inventor of rugby, William Webb Ellis; prime minister David Cameron and Australian prime ministers, John Gorton and Malcolm Turnbull.
The college is home to one of the world’s oldest rowing clubs and the college’s rugby club was founded by former student William Webb Ellis who is credited with inventing the game.
What to see at Brasenose College
Brasenose College has three quadrangles: the Old Quad, the small Deer Park and the New Quad. There is also a 16th-century dining hall and the 17th-century chapel.
Visiting Brasenose College
Brasenose College is opposite the Radcliffe Camera on the western side of Radcliffe Square.
The entry fee for public visiting Brasenose is £2 and visitors receive a map with information about the college.
Like other colleges at Oxford, Brasenose College is occasionally closed to the public for university events.
