The Brighton Harbour Hotel, formerly known as the UMI Hotel and before that, the Belgrave Hotel, recently became part of the small Harbour Hotels chain and it is now one of the nicer hotels on Brighton’s waterfront. It is a lovely hotel but many other places in Brighton are better value.
While most hotels in older buildings on Brighton’s seafront are either a bit tatty or have been restored to reflect the glamour of their Regency-era heyday, the Brighton Harbour Hotel has gone for a more modern look that could be described as French Provincial meets Scandinavian chic. However, the hotel’s exterior doesn’t look too different to other hotels along Brighton’s seafront.
The 79 hotel rooms come with comfortable beds, flatscreen televisions, tea and coffee making facilities including Nespresso coffee machines, complimentary decanters of gin and sherry and en-suite bathrooms with power showers, bathrobes and toiletries from The White Company. Suites and deluxe sea view rooms also feature a roll-top bath in the bedroom.
There are also a couple of cabin-style twin rooms with bunk beds. These rooms are a cheaper alternative to the standard double rooms and these are mostly internal rooms with no windows.
There are some wheelchair-accessible rooms available.
Rooms are bright and sunny and feature pops of either aqua blue and green or an earthy burgundy and orange colour scheme.
Rooms facing the sea offer lovely views but some guests complain about noise from the street below.
The Jetty is the hotel restaurant, which is in a bright sun-filled room on the ground floor that offers lovely sea views. It is tastefully decorated in a casual, yet sophisticated, manner. Its lunch and dinner menu has a focus on fish and seafood and it generally receives high praise and is regarded as a lovely spot for a cream tea or afternoon tea. However, their breakfast menu is not nearly as good as what is served later in the day.
The hotel bar (HarBAR) is a chic spot for a drink where you can enjoy wine, cocktails and beer from local microbreweries as well as food from a menu of light meals and sharing platters. The decor is casual, yet chic, with a marble-topped bar, comfortable bar stools and relaxing spots to sit with friends.
For many guests, one of the hotel’s main features is the grotto-like basement spa which provides ESPA treatments and it also has a sauna, steam room, indoor swimming pool and fitness centre.
The Brighton Harbour Hotel is very centrally located on the Brighton seafront. The Lanes and most parts of the city centre along with most central Brighton attractions (including the British Airways i360, the Brighton Palace Pier, the Brighton Dome, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and the Royal Pavilion) are no more than a 10-minute walk away.
