Carlisle Castle’s history dates back nearly 900 years. Its origins can be traced to the reign of King William II of England, also known as William Rufus, in the late 11th century. The castle was strategically placed near the Anglo-Scottish border to serve as a defensive stronghold against invading forces.

Throughout its existence, Carlisle Castle played a pivotal role in numerous conflicts, including the Anglo-Scottish Wars and the English Civil War.
