What to see at the Chippenham Museum
The museum is housed in an 18th-century townhouse in the centre of Chippenham with exhibits that chart the history of the town and the surrounding area.
Some of the topics covered include the Saxons, the Vikings and King Alfred. Exhibits pertaining to more recent local history include displays about the town’s local industry including the Westinghouse Brake and Signal Company, which was once Chippenham’s largest employer.

Strange and Wonderful Beings: The Work of Clifford and Rosemary Ellis
The Strange and Wonderful Beings exhibition (running until 18 January 2020) showcases the work of Clifford and Rosemary Ellis. The exhibition includes tube posters and has displays that focus on the legacy that the two artists have left on the Bath Academy in Corsham.
Visiting Chippenham Museum
Chippenham Museum is in Chippenham’s town centre just a one-minute walk from both the bus station and the Yelde Hall.
Entry to the museum is free of charge and it is open from Monday to Saturday (it is closed on Sundays).
The museum is wheelchair accessible but wheelchair users need to press the silver button to the left of the main entrance so a staff member can let them in through a level entrance. Once inside, both floors are wheelchair accessible with a lift between floors and accessible toilets.
You should allow between one and two hours to visit the museum.
