The 250-year-old Italian Gothic-style Fitzrovia Chapel is one of London’s hidden secrets and not many locals, let alone tourists know that it exists, but it is well worth a look if you’re in the Fitzrovia neighbourhood on a Wednesday.
When the former Middlesex Hospital was demolished to make way for the Fitzroy Place office, residential and retail development, the 250-year-old Italian Gothic-style Fitzrovia Chapel had to be preserved and the chapel was restored in 2015, revealing beautiful ceilings adorned with sparkling gold leaf and mosaic stars.
It is one of London’s hidden secrets that not many locals, let alone tourists know that it exists, but it is well worth a look if you’re in the neighbourhood on a Wednesday.
Visiting Fitzrovia Chapel
Fitzrovia Chapel is surrounded by a modern residential and office development in the heart of Fitzrovia only a five-minute walk north of Oxford Street. The closest tube station is Goodge Street, which is a five-minute walk away, and Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road tube stations are both within a 10-minute walk.
It is free to visit the chapel, which is open to visitors 11am–4pm on Wednesdays.
It is a tiny chapel that can be quickly visited in 15–20 minutes.
