Folkestone Harbour Arm

The Folkestone Harbour Arm has undergone a remarkable transformation from a ferry port into a thriving leisure precinct with bars, cafes, restaurants and public art.

The Folkestone Harbour Arm was originally built in the 1840s as a ferry port to connect Folkestone with Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. Demand for ferries dropped following the abolition of duty free shopping within the European Union and the ferry service was discontinued in September 2000. Both the ferry terminal and Folkestone Harbour railway station subsequently closed and fell into disrepair.

A £10 million regeneration project was completed in 2016, transforming the Harbour Arm into a leisure precinct. The project included the construction of new walkways, the installation of public art, and a number of new restaurants, cafes, and shops were opened, and the Harbour Arm became a popular spot for events and festivals.

The Folkestone Harbour Arm has revitalised Folkestone, transforming the town from a ferry port into a leisure destination and it has done so in a vibrant and unique way.
