The Great Western Hotel (also known as the GW) is an old railway hotel with an adjoining pub that is a clean and well-maintained accommodation option with easy access to Swindon railway station.
The hotel was originally built in 1869 as a railway hotel (it was also the first pub built by the Arkell’s brewery) and was most recently renovated in 2015.
It is a small hotel with just 13 guest rooms. All rooms have comfortable beds, a work desk, a flat-screen television and tea and coffee making facilities. Although most of the rooms have their own en suite bathrooms some of the budget rooms use a shared bathroom down the corridor. In most instances your room rate includes breakfast.
Some guests complain of noise from taxis and buses and people coming and going to and from the station.
The pub has a good atmosphere and it also serves lunch and dinner alongside Arkell’s ales. The menu consists of the usual classic pub grub as well as filled jacket potatoes and toasted panini.
The town centre is just a five-minute walk away and it is a 20-minute walk to the Old Town, a 10-minute walk to STEAM The Museum of GWR and a 15-minute walk to the Swindon Designer Outlet. The hotel is located across the road from the railway station and it is a two-minute walk from the bus station, which means that it is best suited if you’re travelling by public transport. This is compounded by the fact that car parking is not included and is charged at an additional £15 per day.
