Hope Street Hotel

The Hope Street Hotel is a stylish independent four-star hotel in a Victorian-era Venetian palazzo-style building with a minimalist Nordic-influenced interior decor. It is tastefully designed in a restrained manner, which is a welcome change in a city where many of the other high-end hotels cater to the low-end of the market appealing more to hen and stag party crowd.

The main part of the hotel was built in 1860 in the Venetian palazzo style that was popular at the time. It was originally built for coach and carriage manufacturer, the London Carriage Works (whose name lives on in the hotel restaurant) but the hotel’s entrance is in the modern annexe next door that is more representative of the hotel’s interior, which has a sophisticated, yet minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired design with exposed brick walls, polished timber floorboards and lots of natural light which make the rooms feel bright and spacious.

The hotel’s 89 air-conditioned rooms all have comfortable beds, flat-screen televisions with premium channels, tea and coffee making facilities that include Nespresso coffee machines and en suite bathrooms with bathrobes and slippers. Rooms range from 20m² (215 sq ft) to 31m² (333 sq ft).

The hotel also has seven suites and two large duplex penthouses. These are much larger, ranging from 35m² (377 sq ft) to 54m² (581 sq ft) and have separate living and sleeping areas.

Complimentary ironing and shoe polishing are available to all guests and free Wi-Fi wireless internet is available throughout the hotel.

The hotel’s guests have included Condoleezza Rice, Yoko Ono, Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Quentin Tarantino and in 2005, Xabi Alonso moved into the hotel after his transfer to Liverpool FC from Real Sociedad.

The London Carriage Works, the in-house restaurant, is one of Liverpool’s best. It has a menu consisting of modern British and European cuisine prepared with local seasonal ingredients. A prix fixe menu is available for lunch and (very) early dinner and a more extensive (and expensive) à la carte dinner menu is also available. There is a well-regarded breakfast menu and afternoon tea is served from 3pm to 5pm daily.

The hotel also has a 24-hour gym that all guests are able to use.

The hotel is located in the Georgian Quarter between the city centre and the university precinct. There are a lot of nice bars and restaurants in the neighbourhood including the opulent Philharmonic Dining Rooms, which is only a one-minute walk away.

Hope Street runs between Liverpool’s two cathedrals, which are both around a seven to eight-minute walk away. Other nearby points of interest include the Garstang Museum of Archaeology, the Victoria Gallery and Museum and the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre.

The city centre is around a 15-minute walk through the Ropewalks neighbourhood and it is around a 25-minute walk to Albert Dock and the Liverpool waterfront. Liverpool Lime Street railway station is around a 15-minute walk from the hotel.
