The Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel is a four-star hotel in a Victorian-era building that was once one of Brighton’s grandest hotels.
This hotel was previously called the Ramada Jarvis Hotel Brighton and before that, it was the Norfolk Hotel.
The Grade II listed building was built in 1865 just a few years after the lift was invented and it was one of the earliest hotels to be designed with lifts in mind. However, the Grand Hotel (built just one year earlier) boasts Brighton’s first lift.
Although originally built with around 65 guest rooms, the hotel has been expanded over the years and it now has 117 rooms. Rooms have comfortable beds, a small work desk, a flatscreen television, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms and all but the smallest rooms also have ironing facilities and a trouser press. Superior and privilege rooms are the hotel’s largest rooms and also come with bathrobes and Nespresso coffee machines.
Three of the hotel’s rooms are adapted for wheelchair users.
When the hotel opened in the 19th century, it was one of the grandest hotels in Brighton but nowadays the hotel is a bit run down. To a certain extent, this is not unusual in an older building but one should still expect more from a place that advertises itself as a four-star hotel.
The Brasserie Restaurant is set is a large room on the ground floor that features columns and chandeliers plus panoramic sea views. The restaurant is open each evening for dinner and the Chef’s Choice three-course set menu is a good value alternative to their a la carte menu.
The Brasserie Bar is a more casual dining option that serves food when the restaurant is closed.
The hotel has 24-hour room service, although this carries a £5 surcharge.
The Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel also has facilities for business travellers including a business centre with copying and printing services and six meeting rooms.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
The hotel is on Kings Road near Bedford Square at the western end of Brighton’s seafront. It is across the road from the beach and the British Airways i360 is around a five-minute walk away. The main attractions in the city centre (such as The Lanes, Brighton Museum and the Royal Pavilion) are around 15–20 minutes from the hotel.
Parking is available at the hotel but it costs £18 per night.
