Restormel Castle, situated near the picturesque River Fowey, is one of Cornwall’s four principal Norman castles, alongside Launceston, Tintagel, and Trematon. However, Restormel Castle is unique in its distinctive, perfectly circular, design.
Once a lavish residence for the Earls of Cornwall, by the 16th century, it had fallen into disrepair, and much of its former grandeur had faded. A brief resurgence occurred during the English Civil War when the castle witnessed conflict and occupation.
Today, Restormel Castle is under the care and guardianship of English Heritage, allowing the public to explore its historical and architectural riches.
What to see at Restormel Castle
One of the most striking features of Restormel Castle is its circular layout, a departure from the conventional rectangular design of many English castles. The central courtyard is surrounded by a curtain wall adorned with defensive towers, showcasing the progression of military and architectural tactics over the ages.
Visitors can explore the well-preserved stone walls, strolling along the ramparts to take in panoramic views of the Fowey River valley and the verdant landscapes that surround the castle. At the heart of the castle lies the keep, a commanding structure of historical and architectural significance, which can be accessed and explored.
The moat, crossed by a stone bridge, and the barbican provide insights into the medieval defence mechanisms that safeguarded the castle.
Restormel Castle’s history is presented through informative exhibits on-site, which offer a deeper understanding of the castle’s historical significance.
