Built in the early 1st century AD, Richborough Roman Fort served as a key stronghold for the Roman army during their conquest of Britannia. The fort played a crucial role in controlling access to the Roman province of Britannia and served as a base for military campaigns across southern England.
Over the centuries, the fort underwent various expansions and renovations, evolving into a bustling military settlement with barracks, granaries, workshops and administrative buildings. It also served as a major port and trading hub, dealing with the movement of goods and people between Britain and the continent.
What to see at Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre
Excavations at the Richborough site have yielded a wealth of archaeological treasures, providing valuable insights into Roman military and civilian life. Visitors to the site can explore the remains of the fort’s defensive walls, gatehouses and other structures, as well as view artefacts such as pottery, coins and weapons uncovered during excavations.
One of the most impressive features of the site is the monumental triumphal arch, known as the Richborough Arch, which once stood at the entrance to the fort.
In addition to the fort, the Richborough site is home to an ancient Roman amphitheatre, one of the largest of its kind in Britain. Constructed in the 2nd century AD, the amphitheatre was used for a variety of spectacles and entertainment, including gladiatorial contests, animal hunts and public executions.
Although much of the amphitheatre’s structure has been eroded over time, visitors can still discern the outlines of the arena and seating areas. Interpretive panels offer further insights into the history and significance of this remarkable archaeological site.
The site also includes a museum with displays about life in Roman Britain.
