Sign of the Angel

The Sign of the Angel is a charming 15th-century coaching inn in the centre of historic Lacock village. The 500-year-old building has a half-timbered facade and bags of quirky medieval character including low ceilings, exposed wooden beams and wonky centuries-old stone floors.

The inn featured as the Babberton Arms in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

It is a small hotel with only five guest rooms. All the rooms have comfortable beds, DAB digital radios, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms. When you check-in you will get a welcome tray that includes homemade biscuits.

The rooms have a traditional-style decor that makes the most of the building’s (and the village’s) heritage aspect while using neutral colours to maintain a somewhat contemporary style.

A lovely oak-panelled lounge is available for guests to sit and relax with a drink and a newspaper or a good book.

The historic nature of the building means that it is not suitable for guests with disabilities.

It is a pet-friendly accommodation option, although there is a £15 charge per dog.

The hotel is known for its restaurant, which has a modern British menu. While it is a pricey place for a meal, lunch here can be good value considering the standard of the food and the lovely environment to enjoy it. Outdoor dining is available in the small garden, which is a lovely spot to enjoy a cream tea.

Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.

The Sign of the Angel gets mixed reviews from guests and feedback from some guests suggests that it has gone downhill in recent years. However, you will most likely love the place if you’ve come to England in search of the perfect medieval village. Staying in Lacock is a real treat as you have the whole place to yourself after the daytrippers have returned to Bath and Chippenham for the evening.

The hotel is right in the heart of Lacock village, which is around 6.5km (4 miles) south of Chippenham. It is only a six-minute walk to Lacock Abbey and most other points of interest in Lacock are even closer.
