South Pier

South Pier, one of Blackpool’s three iconic piers, has been a popular spot for visitors since the late 19th century. With a mix of traditional and modern amusements, this popular attraction continues to draw crowds to the seafront, offering a lively atmosphere and a wide range of activities for families and thrill-seekers alike.

Originally named Victoria Pier, South Pier was opened in March 1893, making it the youngest of Blackpool’s three piers. It was initially considered more upmarket than Blackpool’s other two piers, although it became synonymous with the energetic, fun-filled side of Blackpool’s tourism throughout the 20th century. The pier was adapted to cater to changing tastes, with new rides and attractions being added over the years.

What to see at South Pier

Visitors to South Pier can expect an exciting mix of rides, games and amusements. The pier is known for its thrill rides, including the Sky Screamer, a reverse bungee jump that launches riders high into the air, and the Crazy Coaster, a roller coaster that provides a more traditional fairground experience. For those who prefer something a little less intense, there are family-friendly rides such as dodgems and carousels.

In addition to the rides, South Pier features an amusement arcade, offering classic games such as claw machines, slot machines and video games. This section of the pier provides a nostalgic throwback to traditional seaside fun, with plenty of opportunities to win prizes.

South Pier is also home to the Gin House, an upmarket (by Blackpool standards) bar with live entertainment and a large beer garden.

The pier also offers a variety of food and drink options. Visitors can find traditional seaside fare such as fish and chips, ice cream and doughnuts, alongside other snack options. There are several kiosks and cafes scattered along the pier, providing plenty of opportunities to grab a bite while taking in the views of the sea and the Blackpool skyline.

Visiting South Pier

South Pier is at the southern end of Blackpool’s promenade, near Pleasure Beach, Ripley’s Believe it or Not! and Sandcastle Waterpark, which are all within a five-minute walk from the pier.

There is no general admission fee to access South Pier, but individual rides and attractions have their own pricing. Ride tokens can be purchased on-site, with prices varying depending on the attraction.
