This mansion in St James bills itself as ‘London’s most magnificent 18th-century aristocratic palace’. It was built between 1756 and 1766 for John Spencer, first Earl Spencer and was home to the Spencer family until 1895. It is owned by the Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer (the younger brother of Diana, Princess of Wales), but is leased to RIT Capital Partners.
It is one of London’s few remaining 18th-century aristocratic townhouses and has been restored by Lord Rothschild.
What to see at Spencer House
Guided tours of the house operate on Sundays (but not during August). The one-hour guided tours let you see eight lavishly-decorated state rooms.
Visiting Spencer House
Spencer House occupies a quiet spot in the St James’s neighbourhood, backing onto Green Park. It is just a couple of minutes walk to Clarence House and Buckingham Palace is less than a 10-minute walk. The closest tube station is Green Park, a five-minute walk away.
The tour is fully wheelchair accessible. Photography is not permitted inside.
