The Crown Hotel

The Crown Hotel is a large, traditional hotel in the centre of Harrogate. Combining 18th-century architecture with period furnishings, it appeals to travellers seeking character and convenience close to the town’s major attractions. While parts of the hotel show their age, it offers a comfortable stay in one of the most recognisable buildings in this historic spa town.

The Crown Hotel is one of Harrogate’s oldest surviving hotels, with origins dating back to the mid-18th century. Built when Harrogate was emerging as a fashionable spa destination, the hotel catered to wealthy visitors drawn to the town’s mineral springs. Its location, near the Royal Pump Room and Valley Gardens, placed it at the centre of Harrogate’s social and leisure scene. Over the years, the hotel has hosted a variety of notable guests and Lord Bryon is wrote Ode to a Beautiful Quaker while staying at the hotel.

The building retains many of its original Georgian features, such as high ceilings, sash windows and stone facades, giving it a sense of continuity with the town’s past.

The Crown Hotel has 115 rooms spread over four floors, including several suites. The rooms vary in size and layout, reflecting the age of the building, but all are equipped with a flatscreen TV, hairdryer, tea-and-coffee-making facilities and en suite bathrooms. You can find work desks in all but the smallest rooms.

The décor leans towards traditional, with dark wood furniture and patterned fabrics, though some rooms have a more contemporary design.

Rooms are generally clean and well maintained, although some rooms show signs of wear. The windows in front-facing rooms can let in street noise during busy periods.

Overall, the accommodation is functional and comfortable, if not especially modern.

Public facilities at the Crown Hotel are relatively modest, considering the size of the hotel. There is no swimming pool or gym, but the hotel does offer several public lounges and meeting rooms.

The on-site restaurant, The Churchill Suite, serves both breakfast and dinner in an elegant space with high ceilings and period features.

The adjacent Henry’s Bar provides a more relaxed setting for drinks and light meals. It offers a selection of beer and wine, alongside bar snacks and sandwiches. The décor is traditional, with wooden panelling and leather seating, creating a quiet environment in the evenings.

Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.

The Crown Hotel occupies a prominent position in Harrogate’s Montpellier Quarter, one of the town’s most attractive areas. The surrounding neighbourhood is largely commercial, with a mix of boutique shops, cafés, restaurants and antique dealers. It is a short walk from Harrogate’s main tourist attractions, yet the area retains a quiet, relaxed atmosphere.

The hotel’s location makes it particularly convenient for visitors attending exhibitions at the Harrogate Convention Centre, which is about a 10-minute walk away. The Royal Pump Room Museum, the Mercer Gallery and the Valley Gardens are all just a few minutes’ walk away.

The railway and bus stations are both around a 10–15-minute walk from the hotel.
