The Headington Shark is a quirky fibreglass sculpture sticking out the roof of a terrace house in suburban Headington.
The sculpture, which is formally titled “Untitled 1986”, was designed by sculptor John Buckley and installed on 9 August 1986 (the 41st anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bomb).
It caused some controversy when it was installed and the Oxford City Council tried to have it taken down but the Headington Shark had considerable local support and after a legal battle, it was allowed to remain.
Visiting the Headington Shark
The Headington Shark is in Headington in Oxford’s eastern suburbs, around 3.5km (2¼ miles) from the city centre. Oxford Bus Company Park and Ride bus route 400 and Stagecoach bus route 10 both operate frequently between Oxford city centre and Headington. Bus 10 generally runs more frequently, but the Park and Ride 400 bus is a more direct route.
The building is not open to the public and can only be viewed from the outside but it may be worth the trip out to Headington if you love seeing quirky sights.
