The Ship Inn dates from 1592 and it was originally a warehouse used to store contraband seized from smugglers operating along the south coast. It is now run as a gastropub that manages to blend the traditional and modern with an 11-bed boutique hotel upstairs.
Accommodation is in 11 guest rooms above the pub, which all feature comfortable beds, flatscreen televisions with SKY channels and tea and coffee making facilities that include a Nespresso coffee machine but there is no kettle in the room (so you can make a somewhat decent coffee but not an acceptable cup of tea). All rooms have en suite bathrooms with either a bath or shower. The rooms are clean and well maintained with slightly quirky decor. Four of the rooms are dog-friendly as is the pub downstairs.
Accommodation prices are higher on Fridays and Saturdays.
The pub downstairs has a chic yet relaxing and welcoming atmosphere and it boasts a higher standard of food than your average pub (although portion sizes are relatively small). Inside is spacious with big comfortable leather sofas and outside there are picnic tables that are a lovely spot to sit with a drink on a sunny day. The pub serves local organic cider and a selection of real ales with a simple menu comprised of dishes made with locally sourced seasonal produce. However, the food and drinks are on the expensive side for a small-town pub.
The Ship Inn is located at the western edge of Rye’s town centre at the bottom end of Mermaid Street. This area is popular with tourists and daytrippers from Ashford, Folkstone and Hastings and the hotel is around a five-minute walk from the railway station.Check prices and availability for the Ship Inn
