Tramtown is a unique transport museum in a tram depot that offers a unique glimpse into the rich history of one of the world’s oldest operational tram systems.

Blackpool’s tramway system is iconic, having been in continuous operation since its inauguration in 1885. The tramway is one of the few remaining first-generation systems still operating in the world today. Originally introduced to provide a modern form of public transport along the town’s promenade, the tram system soon became an integral part of Blackpool’s identity. Over the decades, trams became synonymous with seaside holidays, transporting millions of tourists and residents alike.

Tramtown was established to preserve and celebrate this heritage. It provides visitors with a behind-the-scenes look at the history and restoration of Blackpool’s trams, some of which date back to the early 20th century.

What to see at Tramtown

Visitors to Tramtown can see a variety of historic trams, from the famous open-top ‘Boat’ trams to the classic ‘Balloon’ double-deckers that once ran along Blackpool’s seafront. Tramtown is also home to a collection of trams in different stages of restoration, providing insight into the careful work that goes into preserving these historic vehicles.

One of the highlights of a visit to Tramtown is the opportunity to go behind the scenes in the workshop. Here, you can observe the meticulous restoration process, which involves repairing everything from the trams’ bodies to their electrical systems. Expert guides are on hand to explain the history of each tram and the techniques used to restore them, offering a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.

The attraction also features guided tours, which take visitors through the tram sheds where the vehicles are stored. These sheds are filled with trams from different eras, some of which are in operational condition while others await their turn in the workshop. The guides offer detailed commentary on the history of each tram, including stories of their use over the years and their significance to Blackpool’s transport history.

In addition to the trams themselves, Tramtown features exhibitions on the history of the tramway, with displays that explore how Blackpool’s trams have evolved over time. Visitors can learn about the different types of trams used over the years, the technology behind their operation, and the role the tramway played in the town’s development.
