Whitley Hall Hotel

Whitley Hall Hotel is a historic country house hotel on the northern outskirts of Sheffield. Known for its tranquil setting and traditional charm, it offers a quiet retreat just a short distance from the city.

Whitley Hall dates back to the 16th century, with the main building originally constructed in 1584. Over the years, it has served as a private residence before being transformed into a hotel. The property retains many original features, including stone mullioned windows, wood panelling and antique fireplaces. Its heritage gives the hotel a sense of character, making it an appealing destination for those interested in history or period architecture. The surrounding grounds, which include manicured gardens and a small lake, contribute to its peaceful atmosphere.

The hotel offers 32 individually styled rooms spread across two floors. Each room combines traditional features with modern comforts. Standard amenities include a work desk, a flatscreen TV, tea-and-coffee-making facilities, ironing facilities and en suite bathrooms. Several rooms feature four-poster beds and garden views, enhancing the rural charm of the stay. Bathrooms are equipped with complimentary toiletries and some have roll-top baths.

At 12–24m² (129–258 sq ft), rooms are a tad smaller than you would expect from such a grand hotel. However, this also makes Whitley Hall a more affordable option than many other country house hotels.

Overall, the accommodation is clean and well maintained, though the décor leans towards traditional rather than contemporary.

Whitley Hall’s 1584 Restaurant is a key feature, offering seasonal British cuisine in an intimate, candlelit setting. Ingredients are locally sourced where possible, and the menu changes regularly to reflect seasonal availability. The Sunday roast is popular and the countryside location is a lovely setting for afternoon tea, which is served daily.

The hotel’s bar offers a relaxed atmosphere, with a selection of wines, beers and spirits. There is no gym or spa on-site, but the outdoor gardens provide a peaceful space for relaxation.

Whitley Hall is located in the rural Ecclesfield area, approximately 10km (6 miles) north of Sheffield city centre. The surrounding neighbourhood is semi-rural, offering a peaceful environment, although it also means that there is little to do in the immediate neighbourhood outside the hotel. However, the hotel grounds include gardens and walking paths, while nearby woodlands provide additional opportunities for outdoor exploration.

The semi-rural location, and free parking, means that this hotel is best suited if you’re driving. While you can get here by public transport, you’re looking at at least a 20-minute walk to the nearest bus stop.
