Whitworth Locke is a cool apartment hotel set in a Victorian-era cotton mill near the Rochdale Canal at the southern edge of Manchester’s city centre.
The complex comprises 160 self-contained apartments, which all have comfortable beds, a dining table, a flatscreen television with Apple TV, a washing machine/dryer, ironing facilities, a kitchenette with a hob, microwave and fridge and an en suite bathroom with a powerful rainfall shower and Kinsey Apothecary toiletries. Most apartments (except the city studio) have sofas and dishwashers are available in some of the suites. Eight of the suites are suitable for guests who require wheelchair access.
Apartments range from the 25m² (269 sq ft) city studio to the spacious 80m² (861 sq ft) two-bedroom suite.
While most apartment hotels focus on in-room amenities and have very little to offer in the way of common spaces, Whiteworth Locke is different in the sense that it has extensive public areas that include a co-working space, coffee shop, cocktail bar and a gym. This creates a community feel among the guests staying here and, along with the historic nature of the building, means that it has a lot more character than your average apartment hotel.
The in-house cafe, The Foundation Coffee House, serves some of the best hotel coffee around, which is a huge improvement over those hotels that are ‘proud to serve Starbucks’.
The conservatory cocktail bar is in an atrium crowned by a glass roof and features a cobblestone floor, which gives it an open feel but also means that it is not as cosy as many other bars in the immediate vicinity around the hotel.
The co-working space is a central focus of the complex and this is a huge draw for business travellers who would like the option to work from somewhere other than inside their room.
The hotel’s basement area includes a gym and a space for yoga classes.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the complex.
The hotel is on Princess Street just south of the Rochdale Canal and the Gay Village and Chinatown are only a few minutes walk away. Most points of interest in the city centre are within a 10–15-minute walk including the Arndale Centre, the Central Retail District, Spinningfields and the Northern Quarter.
Manchester Piccadilly railway station is a seven-minute walk from the hotel.
