Avebury Manor and Garden

Price £13

Avebury Manor and Garden is a Grade-I listed 16th-century manor house in Avebury that was built on the site of a 12th-century Benedictine priory.

In the 1930s the property was leased by Alexander Keiller, who lived here while studying the nearby Neolithic sites. The property is now maintained by the National Trust and a recent refurbishment project was the subject of the 2011 BBC documentary The Manor Reborn.

The house is reputed to be haunted.

What to see at Avebury Manor and Garden

The estate has been restored with different rooms representing the house in different historical periods from the 16th to the 20th century. This includes rooms and parts of the garden decorated in the Tudor, Queen Anne, Georgian, Victorian and early 20th-century styles. It features Tudor and Georgian dining rooms complete with table settings from their respective periods.

Avebury Manor is rather unique for a National Trust property in that much of the furniture is reproduction rather than genuine antiques. This means that you are able to get close to the exhibits, sit on the chairs, lie on the beds and even play on the snooker table. This is a lovely change from other National Trust properties where you have to stand behind a roped-off area and staff give you nasty looks if dare breath on the furniture.

The estate’s garden is split into several sections including a kitchen garden, topiary garden, orchard and the south lawn. During summer, picnic blankets and steamer chairs are available to use.

Visiting Avebury Manor and Garden

Avebury Manor and Garden is located in the centre of Avebury and it is within easy walking distance to the Alexander Keiller Museum and Avebury henge.

The property is operated by the National Trust and National Trust members can visit free of charge.

The gardens are open daily but guided tours of the house only operate three times per day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It is recommended that you book in advance if you want to see inside the house.

Most people spend around an hour visiting the property.
