The Barge Inn is a canalside pub that offers accommodation in five guestrooms. Although it’s not the greatest place to stay, it has a nice garden area that looks over the Kennet and Avon Canal.
The rooms all have en suite bathrooms as well as TVs and tea and coffee making facilities. However, the tea and coffee making facilities are restricted to a Tassimo coffee machine and there’s no kettle so invariably the water coming out of the coffee machine isn’t hot enough to make a proper cup of tea. Also, the beds are not as comfortable as one would expect and it is a bit grubby and run down in places. The rooms have either canal or garden views.
Breakfast is available but it generally comes at an additional charge, which can be somewhat pricey. It is a pet-friendly hotel but again, this comes at an additional charge of around £25 if you want your dog to stay with you. These additional charges are a bit much considering these extras would be included as part of your accommodation price in similar establishments.
The pub is quite nice, certainly nicer than the accommodation, and it features a nice outdoor garden area, which in summer would be a lovely spot to sit with a drink and look out at the canal boats.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available in the reception area but it peters out the farther you move away from the reception. The Wi-Fi is not to be relied upon so you may need to bring your own dongle/hotspot or tether from your mobile.
The Barge Inn is on Frome Road south of the town centre and it backs onto the Kennet and Avon Canal. It is just a five-minute walk to the Tithe Barn, a nine-minute walk to the railway station and just over a 10-minute walk into the town centre.Plenty of parking is available, which makes it a good option if you’re driving.
