The Dixie Dean Hotel is a new four-star hotel that caters mainly to fans of Everton football club.
The hotel is named after Everton legend William Ralph ‘Dixie’ Dean and the hotel appeals mainly to Everton football fans. It is located directly across the road from the Shankly Hotel, which caters to fans of the rival Liverpool football club.
With the launch of the two football-themed hotels, Signature Living (who own both hotels) claimed that the immediate neighbourhood around the two hotels was the world’s first ‘Football Quarter’. Never mind that two football-themed hotels don’t make a quarter and that the area around Goodison Park and Stanley Park (the two teams’ home grounds) was being called Liverpool’s Football Quarter 10 years earlier.
Liverpool already has the Cavern Quarter, the Knowledge Quarter, St George’s Quarter, the Georgian Quarter, Stanley Street Quarter, the Creative Quarter, the Commercial Quarter, the Cotton Quarter and now the Football Quarter. Surely a city can only have four quarters?
It is a relatively small hotel with only 39 guest rooms. All rooms have comfortable beds, a work desk, a flat-screen television, ironing facilities, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms.
While neutral colours feature in many of the guest rooms, Everton’s dark cornflower blue is prominent throughout the hotel. The hotel only opened in mid-2019 so everything is new and well maintained.
The hotel’s decor comprises lots of wood and exposed brick but it is the furnishings that make the biggest impression. This includes big gilt-framed mirrors and velvet-upholstered faux baroque chairs with gold trim. It all seems rather tacky but somehow it suits the hotel.
The hotel’s No. 9 bar and restaurant is named after the number that Dixie Dean wore on the football field and the restaurant features Everton-related memorabilia. The lunchtime menu has pub-style options such as burgers, steak and fish and chips as well as local specialties like scouse while the dinner menu is more upmarket with an excellent oven-roasted saddle of lamb and a sublime vegetarian roasted cauliflower steak. The restaurant also serves afternoon tea and it is noted for its Sunday roast lunch. A meal here is a must if you’re an Everton fan.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
The hotel faces the Shankly Hotel in the self-proclaimed ‘Football Quarter’ at the northern end of the city centre. It is very close to St John’s Gardens and only a five-minute walk to St George’s Hall, the Central Library, the Walker Art Gallery and the World Museum. Mathew Street, where you can find the Cavern Club and the Magical Beatles Museum, is also a five-minute walk from the hotel. Both the Liverpool waterfront and Albert Dock are around a 15-minute walk from the hotel.
The hotel is located midway between Moorfields and Liverpool Lime Street railway stations, which are both a five-minute walk away.
