Ember Locke (formerly the NH London Kensington hotel) is an apartment hotel in a converted Victorian townhouse on Cromwell Road with close proximity to the main points of interest in Kensington and easy access to the rest of London.
Accommodation is comprised of 121 air-conditioned rooms, studio apartments, one-bedroom apartments and family rooms.
Standard rooms have comfortable king-size mattresses, a flatscreen TV, ironing facilities, a safe and en suite bathrooms. Standard rooms are 22m² (237 sq ft).
The rest of the accommodation comprises studio and one-bedroom apartments, which mostly offer more space and, more importantly, also feature cooking facilities and a dining table. Kitchens have Smeg appliances although facilities are limited and despite being advertised as fully-equipped, there’s no proper oven so you can’t bake a cake or make a pizza.
Studio apartments range from a compact 21m² (226 sq ft) to a more spacious 30m² (322 sq ft) and one-bedroom apartments range from 30m² to 34m² (322–366 sq ft).
There is also a 40m² (431 q ft) family room, which is essentially two smaller, interconnected, rooms.
The larger apartments include laundry facilities, although there are also communal laundry facilities in the complex that anyone staying here can use to do their laundry. There is no charge to use the laundry facilities, which means that you don’t need to search for any change before doing a load.
Standard rooms don’t have work desks but the apartments have dining tables that you can work from, although it’s not the best work environment. However, there is a co-working space on site that all guests can use. The co-working space has a great atmosphere but it’s not really set up with big desks, which shouldn’t bother most people but it may be an issue if you like to spread your work out.
The decor is built around warm colours, which gives the place a little more atmosphere than your average hotel room.
The in-house cafe, bar and restaurant is called EVE. It is a lovely space with lots of character and a menu based on flavours from the eastern and southern Mediterranean region.
Other facilities at Ember Locke include a gym and a lovely private garden.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Rates can be reasonably affordable (by London standards) if you stay here for seven days or longer.
The hotel is on busy Cromwell Road, only a one-minute walk from Earls Court Road and within easy walking distance to most parts of Earls Court and Kensington. From here it is a five-minute walk to Earls Court tube station, a seven-minute walk to the shops of High Street Kensington and a 15-minute walk to the Olympia Exhibition Centre.
Several tourist attractions are also within easy walking distance and it is an eight-minute walk to the Design Museum and Kensington Palace, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Albert Hall are around a 20-minute walk from the hotel.
The hotel’s proximity to Earls Court Tube station (on the District and Piccadilly lines) means that you can quickly get to other areas of London. From here you can get to South Kensington in four minutes, Kings Cross St Pancras in 20 minutes, Piccadilly Circus in 12 minutes and Westminster in 13 minutes. The Piccadilly line also serves as a direct link to Heathrow Airport with a journey time of around 35 minutes.
