The George Hotel

The George Hotel offers accommodation above a traditional pub right in the heart of Amesbury’s town centre. It is a great option for people who prefer accommodation with a bit of character.

The hotel’s 32 guest rooms are split between cosy single rooms, standard double rooms and larger double rooms with big four-poster beds. The rooms are decorated in a traditional fashion in keeping with the building’s historic nature and all the rooms have flat-screen televisions, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms.

This 16th-century coaching inn is a Grade II-listed building that is a great accommodation option if you prefer to stay somewhere with character as opposed to a sterile chain hotel. Many of the rooms display the typical characteristics of a Tudor-era building with wonky floors, exposed oak beams and wattle and daub walls.

The hotel has a rich history. During the English Civil War, the Parliamentary commander-in-chief Thomas Fairfax, 3rd Lord Fairfax of Cameron based himself at the hotel. Other notable guests at the George have included the Duke of Wellington, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Carlyle and the textile designer, William Morris.

The accommodation is located above a pub which serves a hearty all-day full-English breakfast as well as a lunch and dinner menu featuring pub classics such as fish and chips, steak and ale pie and sausage and mash.

Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.

The George Hotel is on the High Street right in the heart of the town centre and there are plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs within easy walking distance. It is around a 25-minute walk to Woodhenge and around a 1½-hour walk to Stonehenge.

Despite being so close to Stonehenge, there is no direct bus service from Amesbury (the only direct bus route is from Salisbury). However, it’s perfect if you’re driving as the hotel has free parking and Stonehenge is only an eight-minute drive away.
