The King Street Townhouse is a very nice four-star hotel in a historic building in the King Street Conservation Area (but it is not actually on King Street).
The hotel is in an Italian Renaissance-style building built in 1872 for the Manchester Salford Trustees Bank, which later became part of the Lloyds Banking Group. It has a quirky interior design that gives a nod to Manchester’s history and each room has a unique design although most have a colour palette of subtle blue, brown, green and grey.
It’s a small hotel with only 40 guest bedrooms, which are divided into Snug, Cosy and Comfy.
The Snug rooms are the smallest rooms, measuring 20–25m² (215–270 sq ft). These rooms have comfortable beds, a flat screen television with Sky channels, a work desk, minibar, coffee machine and an en suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. Room 56 is the smallest, but it offers the best views of the Town Hall.
The next step up are the Cosy rooms, which measure 24–28m² (255–295 sq ft). These rooms have all the amenities of the Snug rooms, but the rooms are larger and the en-suite bathroom has both a walk-in shower and a free-standing bath.
The larger Comfy rooms are 27–32m² (290–340 sq ft). The Comfy rooms have all the amenities of the Cosy rooms, but with larger (super king-size) beds.
The hotel also has suites, which give you a lot more room and include separate living and sleeping areas.
All rooms have free Wi-Fi wireless internet access and the hotel has one wheelchair-accessible bedroom.
The King Street Tavern adjacent to the reception area on the ground floor is the hotel restaurant which has a menu of modern British classics. The Tavern features a Bottomless Brunch set menu that includes 1½ hours of free Champagne refills and it is also noted for its afternoon tea. There is also a mezzanine lounge that can be reserved as a private dining area. There is also the South Terrace Bar on the sixth floor, which has wonderful views over the city.
The highlight, however, is the hotel’s rooftop infinity pool (Manchester’s first) that offers spectacular views of Manchester Town Hall’s gothic clock tower. Although it is a small swimming pool that can get a bit chilly, there are also a couple of steam rooms to warm up in after taking a dip in the pool. The hotel also has a small gym.
It is not cheap, but it is certainly nicer than most other Manchester hotels in the same price range.
Despite its name, the King Street Townhouse is located on Booth Street in the heart of central Manchester, just north of Manchester Town Hall. Virtually all the Central Retail District is within a five-minute walk, the National Football Museum and the Northern Quarter are a 10-minute walk away and it is a 15-minute walk to Manchester Piccadilly railway station.
