Lambeth Palace, previously known as Manor of Lambeth and also as Lambeth House, is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s official London residence.
The building was originally constructed 800 years ago, although the oldest part of the building is Lollard’s Tower, which dates from 1435.
Visiting Lambeth Palace
Lambeth Palace is in Lambeth across the River Thames from Westminster, around a 15-minute walk south of Waterloo railway station. The closest tube station is Lambeth North (on the Bakerloo line).
The palace is usually closed to visitors as it primarily a working palace and private residence but guided tours of the complex are occasionally sold through Ticketmaster.
It is also possible to visit the grounds when the annual North Lambeth Parish Fete is held (the last Saturday in June) and there are open days when you can visit the garden one a month between April and September.
The closest attraction to Lambeth Palace is the Garden Museum, which is inside the adjoining Church of St Mary-at-Lambeth. There are many other attractions within walking distance including Churchill War Rooms, Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben), Florence Nightingale Museum, Houses of Parliament, Imperial War Museum, Jewel Tower, the Coca-Cola London Eye, London Dungeon, SEA LIFE Aquarium, Tate Britain and Westminster Abbey, which are all within a 15-minute walk.
