Leasowe Castle

Leasowe Castle is a charming hotel in a 16th-century castle on the Wirral peninsula. The suburban location means that it is not a particularly convenient base for visiting central Liverpool but it is not every day that you have the opportunity to stay in a castle.

The castle was originally built in 1593 for Ferdinando Stanley, 5th Earl of Derby, who was a patron of William Shakespeare. The castle was first used as a hotel after 1826 and it was used as a railway convalescent home between 1974 and 1980. It reopened as a hotel towards the end of 1982.

The castle is mostly built in stone but it also features a wattle-and-daub section in the traditional Tudor style. Despite its age, the building is in very good condition.

The hotel has 47 guest rooms, which all have comfortable beds, flatscreen televisions, a work desk, ironing facilities including a trouser press, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms with either a bath or shower.

Rooms at the rear of the castle have lovely views of the golf course and the Irish Sea.

Leasowe Castle is located by the seaside in the suburbs at the northern end of the Wirral peninsula. There is not much of interest in the immediate neighbourhood and you’ll most likely find yourself eating and drinking in one of the hotel’s in-house bars and restaurants.

Dining options at the hotel include Brasserie 1593 with a British and European-influenced menu and Wreckers Bar & Lounge, which has a more concise pub-style menu. The historic Star Chamber is a lovely spot for afternoon tea.

Leasowe railway station is around a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Trains run every 15 minutes during the day and at half-hour intervals during off-peak periods. The journey to Liverpool Central takes 22 minutes.

It is around a 20-minute drive into Liverpool city centre and the hotel has free car parking.

It is a popular wedding venue and you may want to avoid staying here on weekends when weddings are most likely to be scheduled as it can feel awkward being one of the few hotel guests not attending a wedding.
