Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge (officially the London Millennium Footbridge) is an eye-catching suspension footbridge across the River Thames linking the City of London, near St Paul’s Cathedral, with the Tate Modern gallery in the Bankside neighbourhood. The bridge opened in June 2000 but was closed shortly afterwards after complaints about the swaying motion that many people felt while walking across. It was reopened in 2002 after modifications were made to eliminate the bridge’s wobble.

Visitors to the Millennium Bridge are rewarded with excellent photo opportunities as it provides a vantage point with views of St Paul’s Cathedral and the City of London skyline, the Shard, Tower Bridge and the River Thames.

The bridge is located between Blackfriars Bridge and Southwark Bridge and the closest tube stations are Blackfriars and Mansion House (both on the Circle and District lines) and St Paul’s (on the Central line).

The southern end of the bridge is close to attractions in the Bankside neighbourhood including the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the Clink Prison Museum, Winchester Palace, the Golden Hinde and Borough Market.

The northern end of the bridge is close to the attractions in the City of London including St Paul’s Cathedral, Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey), the Monument to the Great Fire of London, the Bank of England Museum, Guildhall, Guildhall Art Gallery and the City of London Police Museum.
