Number Sixteen is a small boutique hotel in a white stucco terrace house just a short walk from the museums in South Kensington. It is a low-key place to stay with little external branding other than the number 16 painted on the column near the front entrance.
The hotel has 41 guest rooms, which all have comfortable beds, a writing desk, a flatscreen television and en suite bathrooms with RikRak toiletries.
The single and queen rooms are a very compact 8–10m² (86–108 sq ft) but are ideal for single travellers who don’t need too much space while couples usually stay in the superior, luxury, deluxe and Sumner rooms, which range from 12–28m² (129–297 sq ft).
The hotel is decorated by the owners, Tim and Kit Kemp, in a modern folksy style with wallpaper patterned with whimsical designs and splashes of bright colour.
Number Sixteen has more communal spaces than you would expect for such a small hotel. These include two lovely drawing rooms on the ground floor and a small garden that features the hotel’s restaurant/cafe, The Orangery.
The Orangery serves light meals including a particularly good afternoon tea and has outdoor seating that spills out into the garden. It is a lovely space, particularly if you’re here on a sunny day.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Like many other small hotels in historic buildings, Number Sixteen is not suitable if you’re looking to stay somewhere with wheelchair access. For this, you’ll need to stay in a larger hotel with less character.
It is on a quiet residential street of white terrace houses in affluent South Kensington and it is just around the corner from South Kensington’s shops, pubs and restaurants. The South Kensington museums, which include the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, are less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel and Harrods, Kings Road in Chelsea, the Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park are all around a 15-minute walk away.
The hotel is only a two-minute walk from South Kensington tube station, which is in zone one between Gloucester Road and Sloane Square and is served by the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines. From here it is only a nine-minute ride to Piccadilly Circus, a 10-minute ride to Westminster, an 11-minute ride to Paddington, an 18-minute ride to Monument, 16 minutes to Kings Cross St Pancras and 40 minutes to Heathrow Airport.
