Selina NQ1 Manchester (formerly Hatters Hilton Chambers) is a slightly upmarket hostel in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
This place is a lot nicer than the original with more attention given to the interior design with a bright reception area with polished floorboards and a contemporary decor featuring black, grey and splashes of bright yellow.
Accommodation is in a mix of private rooms and mixed shared dormitories. The private rooms here are quite nice but the dorm rooms can be a little crowded. Dorms at Selina NQ1 range from four to 12 beds. Unlike many hostels, the rooms at Selina NQ1 all have en-suite bathrooms.
Shared common areas at Selina NQ1 include a self-catering kitchen (with free tea and coffee making facilities), a television lounge and a games room with table football, darts and mini snooker.
Feedback from other guests is mixed with some people loving it and others not so keen on the place. Some of this could be due to the fact that some of those guests simply weren’t used to staying in hostels although we get the impression that the standard of accommodation may vary somewhat from one room to another.
Although Selina NQ1 is a step up from most other hostels, it could be cleaner and it is not as nice as the YHA hostel in Castlefield. However, the atmosphere and location of Selina NQ1 is much better than the YHA.
The location in the heart of the Northern Quarter is brilliant. It is only a few minutes’ walk to all the attractions of the Northern Quarter including Affleck’s and the Greater Manchester Police Museum. The Arndale Centre, the Corn Exchange, the Central Retail District, the National Football Museum and Manchester Piccadilly railway station are all within a 10-minute walk from the hostel.
