YHA Manchester

Manchester’s YHA hostel is a modern hostel with a nice canalside location on the southwestern edge of the city centre.

The YHA Manchester hostel has 152 beds in 37 rooms and the accommodation options include both shared dormitories as well as some private rooms. All the rooms (both dormitories and private rooms) are clean and tidy and have en-suite bathrooms. There are lockers in the dorms to keep your gear safe but you need to supply your own padlock.

Facilities at the hostel include a cafe/bar/restaurant, a TV lounge, games room with a pool table and table football, a self-catering kitchen and laundry facilities. There are also some conference rooms that are used when large groups stay here.

Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available and, unusual for a city centre hostel, there is free car parking available for guests which makes this place a good spot to stay if you’re driving and need somewhere to stay on a budget.

The hostel decor features bright colours including YHA’s trademark green (the bright green walls aren’t to everyone’s taste but they can come in handy if you’re shooting a video that needs a green screen). The common areas are bright, modern and well-maintained although the hostel can feel a little sterile at times.

The canalside location is lovely and the lounge area next to the reception has big floor-to-ceiling windows that look over Bridgewater Canal and there are some picnic tables by the canalside that are a nice spot to relax on a sunny day.

The hostel overlooks Bridgewater Canal at the southwestern edge of the city centre. It is a four-minute walk to the Museum of Science and Industry; a 10-minute walk to Spinningfields and a 15 to 20-minute walk to the Central Retail District. The closest railway station is Deansgate (a 10-minute walk from the hostel) but it is a half-hour walk to Manchester Piccadilly railway station, although it is a lovely walk to the station along the Rochdale Canal Tow Path.
