The Hard Interchange

The Hard Interchange is Portsmouth’s main bus and coach terminal, which is located adjacent Portsmouth Harbour train station. It is served by both local and regional buses as well as long-distance coaches operated by Megabus and National Express.

Local bus routes in the Portsmouth area and the surrounding Hampshire and West Sussex region are mostly run by First and Stagecoach.

Most visitors to Portsmouth find that First’s bus network is the more useful of the two bus operators in the Portsmouth area with more urban and suburban services than Stagecoach. You can find the First Portsmouth route map here.

The X4 is one of First’s longer routes, going all the way from Portsmouth to Southampton. This service runs every 30 minutes and takes one hour and 40 minutes to make the complete journey. This is usually the cheapest way to travel between these two cities, although both the train and the National Express coach are twice as fast.

Stagecoach also operates a fairly extensive bus network in the Portsmouth area, although it is not quite as useful for travellers as First’s network. You can see the Stagecoach Portsmouth route map here.

The most useful Stagecoach service is route 700, also known as the Coastliner bus, which runs from Portsmouth to Brighton stopping en route in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. Buses on this route run every 20 minutes, with more frequent services on the Littlehampton–Brighton section. The route runs for 80.6km (50 miles) but takes almost 4½ hours as it is a local service making lots of stops along the way. This route is sometimes broken into three shorter sections, requiring that you change buses at Chichester and Littlehampton in order to complete the entire route.

If you’re going farther afield than Hampshire or West Sussex, then National Express and Megabus operate coaches to many large cities throughout the UK.

Megabus operates two services per day from Portsmouth to Newcastle upon Tyne stopping en route in Southampton, Oxford, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

National Express operates around 40 departures per day from Portsmouth with direct services to Bath, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Coventry, Exeter, Gatwick Airport, Heathrow Airport, Leicester, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Oxford, Plymouth, Salisbury, Sheffield and Southampton.
