The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa

The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is a luxury five-star hotel in a 250-year-old townhouse in Bath’s most famous street, the Royal Crescent.

The hotel is set inside the Grade I listed townhouse that was previously home to Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. It has operated as a hotel since 1971.

The hotel has 45 rooms and suites, which include 34 guest rooms and 11 suites. All rooms have comfortable beds, a sitting area, a writing desk, a flatscreen television, ironing facilities, tea and coffee making facilities and an en suite bathroom with Noble Isle toiletries. Rooms have high ceilings with intricate cornices and the interior decor is in keeping with the historic nature of the building. Some of the rooms offer lovely views of the River Avon and the Cotswolds.

Rooms are split between the Royal Crescent townhouse and an annexe to the rear of the main building. The Royal Crescent building has more character, although both parts of the hotel have a traditional decor reminiscent of the Georgian period.

The hotel’s suites are larger and include separate living and sleeping areas and the spacious master bedrooms are not much different to what other hotels would call a junior suite.

Rooms range from 23m² (247 sq ft) to 28m² (301 sq ft) and suites start at 36m² (387 sq ft) and go up to 64m² (689 sq ft).

There is a .4ha (one acre) private garden to the rear of the hotel that boasts a croquet lawn and outdoor seating where you can enjoy afternoon tea or a light meal.

The Dower House restaurant allows guests to enjoy a modern British fine dining menu in elegant surroundings. It is also a delightful spot for afternoon tea, although it is rather pricey.

The hotel’s spa facilities are also a drawcard for many guests; however, they don’t draw from the city’s famous natural mineral waters. If you want to bathe in Bath’s mineral waters then you need to either stay at The Gainsborough or visit Thermae Bath Spa. Despite this, it is an award-winning spa with excellent facilities that include a 12m- (39 ft)-long relaxation pool, a sauna, a steam room and spa treatment rooms.

The hotel also has its own fitness centre.

Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.

It is an expensive place to stay but it may be worth it if you want to experience Bath’s Georgian heritage on a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

The hotel is located in the centre of the Royal Cresent, Bath’s most well-known street, which has featured in Jane Austen’s Persuasion. It is a quiet location with a park right across the road but there is not a lot in the way of places to eat and drink in the immediate vicinity. It is only a short five-minute walk from the northern edge of the city centre and a 20-minute walk from Bath Spa railway station.

Valet parking is available but it costs £30 per night. Complimentary charging is available for guests with electric vehicles.
