Wakefield Museum is a small local history museum in Wakefield’s city centre. It has exhibits on local history and culture, and a visit provides a great introduction to Wakefield.
What to see at Wakefield Museum
The museum has exhibits on local history, which includes the Welcome to Wakefield gallery, which introduces the visitor to Wakefield plus displays about the Battle of Wakefield, the Tudor-era Manor of Wakefield, HM Prison Wakefield and the West Yorkshire Police.
The museum also has a display about Charles Waterton, a Victorian-era explorer who is noted for developing one of Europe’s first nature parks.
Temporary exhibitions at Wakefield Museum
The museum also has a programme of temporary exhibitions. Current and planned exhibitions include:
Moving Stories
This exhibition explores the work behind the museum’s planned 2025 relocation to the former BHS department store in Wakefield city centre.
Visiting Wakefield Museum
Wakefield Museum is located on the lower ground floor of Wakefield One, a civic building that also includes local council offices and Wakefield’s main library. It is at the western edge of the city centre, just a three-minute walk from Wakefield Westgate railway station.
The museum is open Monday to Saturday (closed on Sundays) and admission to the museum is free of charge.
There is a cafe inside the building, although its central location means that there are plenty of other places to eat and drink within the immediate vicinity.
