The Yelde Hall was built around 1450, making it Chippenham’s oldest building. The hall in Chippenham town centre has been used as a gaol, a courtroom, council chambers, a bank, an armoury, a fire station, a tourist information centre and as a museum during its rich history.

What to see at the Yelde Hall

Although there is not a lot to see at the Yelde Hall, it is an iconic building that is worth a quick look if you’re wandering around Chippenham’s town centre.

The 15th-century timber-framed building, which dates from the Middle Ages, features a timber roof that is impressive for its age as well as several museum-style exhibits including a vintage fire engine and a mock Tudor-era courtroom.

Visiting the Yelde Hall

The Yelde Hall is in the town centre just around the corner from the Chippenham Museum and the bus station.

Admission to the hall is free of charge so there is no reason not to visit.

It is a relatively small attraction and a visit shouldn’t take much longer than half an hour.
