Birmingham New Street railway station

Of Birmingham’s three main train stations, Birmingham New Street railway station handles most mainline train services and it is the sixth-busiest railway station in the United Kingdom.

Birmingham New Street railway station underwent a major redevelopment with the regenerated station relaunching in 2015 incorporating a new concourse and the Grand Central shopping centre with a new John Lewis department store. In addition to more than 60 shops in the Grand Central shopping centre, station facilities include plenty of shops and places to eat and drink while waiting for your train including branches of Boots the chemist, M&S Simply Food and WHSmith newsagent plus All Bar One, Benugo, Caffè Nero, Camden Food Co., Costa, Greggs, Leon, Mi Casa Burritos, The Pasty Shop, Pret a Manger, Starbucks, Upper Crust and Wasabi.

Birmingham New Street is served by five railway companies. Arriva Trains Wales has trains to Shrewsbury, Chester, Holyhead and Aberystwyth; CrossCountry trains go to Bournemouth, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leicester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Peterborough, Plymouth, Reading, Sheffield, Stansted Airport and York; London Northwestern Railway go to Liverpool and London; Virgin Trains have trains to Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Liverpool, Manchester and Shrewsbury and West Midlands Railway operate mostly suburban services plus rail services to Hereford, Shrewsbury and Stratford-upon-Avon.

From Birmingham New Street railway station there are six trains per hour to London Euston; four trains per hour to Lichfield and Liverpool; two trains per hour to Bristol, Derby, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Reading, Shrewsbury, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent and hourly trains to Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Peterborough, Sheffield, Stansted Airport and York.

The West Midlands Day Ranger is a good deal if you want to make a day trip out of Birmingham. It is good for one-day unlimited travel in the West Midlands (Birmingham and Coventry) and parts of neighbouring counties including Crewe, Hereford, Northampton, Leamington Spa, Rugby, Shrewsbury, Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Stratford-upon-Avon and Worcester. It is good for off-peak travel after 9am Mon–Fri and all day on weekends. This pass costs £26.50.
