Carlisle has excellent rail services including hourly trains to Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London (Euston) and Newcastle. There are also direct trains to Barrow-in-Furness, Leeds and Manchester Airport. Services are less frequent on Sundays.
Carlisle is the last station before Scotland on the West Coast Main Line and is also the northern terminus of the scenic Settle–Carlisle rail line. It is served by five different railway operators.
From Carlisle, there are two trains per hour to Glasgow and London and hourly trains to Barrow-in-Furness, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne. Less frequent rail services include trains to Edinburgh every two hours and eight trains per day to Leeds via the scenic Settle–Carlisle line.
