The Corner London City Hotel (formerly the Qbic London City Hotel) is a quirky hotel in London’s East End, which is just a short walk to the Square Mile.
The 183 guest rooms all have comfortable beds, a small work desk, a flatscreen television and an en suite bathroom with a walk-in rain shower. The in-room decor is quirky and fun but it won’t appeal to everyone and the TVs are mounted to the foot of your bed so it is only practical to watch telly when you’re in bed. The hotel’s cheaper ‘smart’ rooms do not have windows.
Unlike many hotels, the rooms do not have tea and coffee-making facilities; however, there are shared tea and coffee stations in the hallways.
Qbic is very good value for money, particularly considering the hotel’s boutique-style interior decor and its central location. It also makes a big deal about its eco-friendly credentials with solar panels on the roof and electric vehicle charging stations in the car park.
Motley is the hotel’s cafe/restaurant/bar, which is open for lunch and dinner. The menu features sharing boards and there is a £6 lunch meal deal every day between noon and 3pm.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Although Whitechapel is not the most attractive part of London, it becomes more gentrified the closer you get to The City and there are a lot of new flats and offices in the immediate vicinity around the hotel. There are also plenty of places to eat and drink and Brick Lane, which is noted for its excellent choice of Bangladeshi restaurants, is only a two-minute walk away.
You can walk to the edge of the City of London in seven minutes and many of the City’s top attractions are within a half-hour walk, including the Bank of England Museum, Guildhall Art Gallery, the City of London Police Museum, the Gherkin, the Monument, the Sky Garden, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.
Aldgate East tube station is only a three-minute walk away and Aldgate and Whitechapel tube stations are both less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Aldgate East is in zone one and is served by the District and Hammersmith & City lines. From here it takes four minutes to get to Monument and 15 minutes to Westminster with trains running every 3–4 minutes and two minutes to Liverpool Street or 12 minutes to King’s Cross & St Pancras International with trains running every 10 minutes.
Secure car parking is available for £20 per night.
