De Vere Devonport House is a high-end hotel in the centre of Greenwich that is situated in an historic building that is steeped in British naval history.
The hotel is housed inside the historic Georgian-style Devonport House, which dates from 1783 when it was built as a school building for the nearby Greenwich Hospital. A nautical theme pervades the hotel’s public areas although the rooms have been spared the nautical-inspired decor and have an interior design that falls somewhere between contemporary and traditional.
The 99 hotel rooms all have comfortable beds, a writing desk, a flatscreen television, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms. Some of the rooms are quite small with standard rooms ranging from 12.2m² (131 sq ft) to 16.9m² (182 sq ft), however, the hotel’s superior rooms are a more spacious 25m² (269 sq ft).
The hotel’s on-site restaurant and bar feature a nautical theme that is a nod to Greenwich’s naval history. The lounge bar is called the Officer’s Mess, which is a charming spot for a drink or two and a meal from their international menu.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Although it is positioned as an upscale hotel, it is often not that much more expensive to stay here in comparison with other hotels elsewhere in Greenwich. This is not so much because it is a good value place to stay but more because the high price of accommodation in London increases the price of nearby budget hotels that elsewhere would represent a much cheaper accommodation option.
Overall, this is a charming hotel with plenty of character but it does lack some of the mod cons found in newer hotels (such as air conditioning) and some guests report that parts of the hotel can feel a little dated.
Although it has a suburban location, the De Vere Devonport House hotel is in the centre of a vibrant neighbourhood and there are enough points of interest to keep yourself busy for a full day.The hotel is next door to the National Maritime Museum and the Cutty Sark, the Fan Museum, Queen’s House and the Royal Naval College are all less than a five-minute walk from here and the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and Ranger’s House are less than a 10-minute walk away.
From here you can take either the DLR or the train into Central London. Cutty Sark DLR is the closest station (a seven-minute walk from the hotel) and it is a 10-minute walk to Greenwich railway station.
From Cutty Sark DLR station, it takes 21 minutes to get into Bank in The City with trains running every five minutes. You can also take the DLR to London City Airport (which involves a change of DLR at Westferry) in under half an hour.
However, the quickest way into Central London is by train from Greenwich station with trains to London Bridge running around once every 10 minutes with a journey time of between eight and 10 minutes.
