Drakes Hotel

Although it doesn’t look particularly special from the outside; once inside, the four-star Drakes Hotel is a stylish place to stay that is among Brighton’s top hotels.

The boutique hotel is comprised of a pair of Georgian-era townhouses that feature curved walls, light-coloured wood panelling and custom-built furniture. Each of the hotel’s 20 rooms has comfortable queen-size beds, work desks, nice armchairs and en suite bathrooms with bathrobes, slippers and White Company amenity packs

Drakes pay attention to all the little details that other hoteliers overlook and there are lots of little extras that most larger hotel operators would deem a waste of money. Although electric curtains may seem a frivolous extra, it is these little extras that can make a big difference.

Most south-facing rooms also have freestanding baths positioned in front of the large bay windows so you can enjoy the sea view while taking a bath. However, the smaller city view rooms look out over the rooftops of Kemptown.

Considering that it is a hotel with modern decor, it has a lot of character. Service here is professional and discrete and it is no wonder that it is popular with celebrities and is a favourite of Woody Allen, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kylie Minogue.

The hotel has a lovely cocktail bar on the ground floor that has a clubby feel and a lower ground floor restaurant that features exposed brick walls and domed ceilings. The restaurant is one of Brighton’s best and has an excellent (but pricey) prix fixe menu as well as a five-course tasting menu that features a matching wine flight.

Room service is available 24-hours and the bar is also open 24 hours (although it is closed to non-residents late at night).

Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.

A minimum two-night stay applies on weekends.

Drakes Hotel is across the road from the beach and Brighton Palace Pier and it is just a short walk to Kemptown’s shops, bars and cafes. The city centre along with The Lanes, Brighton Dome, Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and the Royal Pavilion are all within a 10-minute walk of the hotel.

Because it is on a busy road, south-facing rooms can suffer from external noise.

Parking is available and this costs £15 for 24 hours.
