The George Inn is a charming old 14th-century pub with accommodation upstairs.
Dating from 1361, it is the oldest pub in Lacock and like most buildings in the village, it is owned by the National Trust. However, the bar and accommodation is operated by Wadworth (who also run The Red Lion just a couple of minutes walk from here, near the entrance to Lacock Abbey).
There are only two guest rooms so you should book ahead to make sure that there is a room available for you. Both rooms have comfortable beds, a flat-screen television, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms. The hotel rooms have a traditional-style decor in keeping with the village’s heritage but with neutral colours.
Because there are only two rooms, there is no dedicated hotel reception and guests check in at the bar inside the pub. This means that you can only check in during pub opening hours (Mon–Sat 11am–11pm, Sun 11am–10.30pm).
The George Inn is primarily a local pub that just happens to also offer accommodation and as such the focus is on the pub downstairs. The pub is a great place for a drink and it was awarded Wiltshire Pub of the Year in 2018. It serves a good selection of food and drink including Wadworth’s ales and local cider and it does a great Sunday roast. Some of the pub’s unique features include an open fireplace dating from medieval times and also the pub’s famous dog wheel (make sure you ask to see it).
The George Inn is on West Street in the centre of Lacock, right next to the village’s main bus stop where you can catch regular buses to Chippenham and Trowbridge. Most points of interest in the village, including Lacock Abbey, the Fox Talbot Museum and St Cyriac’s Church, are no more than a two- to three-minute walk away.Check prices and availability for The George Inn
