The 81-room budget hotel has accommodation in basic rooms that have comfortable beds, a flat-screen television, a small work desk and an en suite bathroom. The hotel has double and twin rooms as well as triple rooms that are set up with a double bed with a single bunk above it. Some of the rooms are wheelchair accessible.

Ibis budget is the cheapest and most basic of the three tiers of the ibis brand and some ibis budget hotels were previously branded as Hotel Formule 1 (although this hotel was previously an Etap Hotel). Hotels in the ibis budget chain follow a certain cookie-cutter approach with identical rooms within the hotel and from one hotel to another. It’s a budget hotel that does exactly what it says on the tin. There’s nothing fancy about ibis budget, but it delivers on its budget promise with rooms that are simple, clean and cheap.

Although it is only 500m (⅓ mile) from London City Airport, the road layout means that the actual walking distance to the airport is twice as far as this and it takes most people 12 minutes to walk to the terminal building, and it is not a particularly pleasant walk either. The hotel is also close to ExCel Exhibition Centre, which is a 15-minute walk away.

Despite being located on a peninsula surrounded by water, it’s not the most attractive location and it can feel like staying in an industrial estate with the immediate neighbourhood dominated by a large sugar refinery. However, it is only a short walk to Thames Barrier Park, which offers great views of the Thames Flood Barrier and the area just west of the park is a modern residential development with smart apartment buildings as well as several places to eat and drink.

Pontoon Dock is the closest DLR station (a seven-minute walk from the hotel) and from here it takes around 20 minutes to get to Bank in The City with trains running every 10 minutes.

It is particularly good value considering that free on-site car parking is available.

The ibis budget London City Airport hotel is temporarily closed and is expected to re-open in December 2022
