Mama Shelter London Shoreditch is a large hotel with kitschy decor on the edge of Bethnal Green in East London. It is a fun place to stay that is only a 10-minute bus ride from The City.
The hotel has 194 guest rooms, which all have comfortable beds, a work desk, a flatscreen television, a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and an en suite bathroom. Rooms are split between small, medium and large. Small rooms are 11–12m² (118–129 sq ft), medium rooms are 17–19m² (183–205 sq ft) and large rooms are 21–36m² (226–388 sq ft).
The eclectic decor can sometimes feel a bit cluttered and it is not to everyone’s taste; however, it is a great place to stay if you’re fed up with the bland corporate decor that you find in most other chain hotels.
The bar and restaurant is a focal point of the hotel that can be a fun place to hang out. Both the restaurant and the garden bar have way more character than your average chain hotel restaurant. Although the food here is nice, it is no match for other restaurants in the neighbourhood.
Other facilities include a laundry and ironing room, a gym and even a couple of soundproof karaoke rooms.
Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the hotel.
In many ways, the atmosphere and overall vibe of the hotel is in line with that of a high-end hostel, particularly with the hotel’s common areas which are designed to encourage guests to hang out and get to know one another. It is a bit like Marriott’s Moxy brand but with a little more soul. For this reason, Mama Shelter is a popular option with former backpackers who can now afford to stay in hotels when they travel.
The hotel is on Hackney Road in East London around between Bethnal Green and the Hoxton/Shoreditch area. It is a vibrant area with an edgy feel that is popular with the hipster crowd and there are plenty of interesting places to eat and drink nearby.
It is just a four-minute walk to Cambridge Heath station, which has four trains per hour to Liverpool Street station in The City and Bethnal Green tube station is not much farther away. Despite the station just up the road, it is easiest to get into town by bus with bus route 26 taking around 10 minutes to get into The City with services running every eight minutes. You can also walk into The City in just 35 minutes.
