The Royal Foundation of St Katharine

The Royal Foundation of St Katharine is a charitable foundation that offers accommodation in a peaceful setting just a short walk away from Limehouse station.

The foundation was established in 1147 and has moved to several different locations in London’s East End after its original location was demolished in 1825 to build St Katherine Docks.

Accommodation is in 36 guest rooms, which all have comfortable beds, a writing desk, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bathrooms. Most rooms range from 15m² (161 sq ft) to 27m² (291 sq ft).

The Royal Foundation of St Katherine features a lovely central courtyard which is a delightful retreat from the busy city and its rose garden features a rose bush planted by Queen Elizabeth II.

It also features a cafe inside a yurt, which makes for an interesting change from your average hotel restaurant.

Free Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout the complex.

It isn’t for everyone and it can feel a little strange staying somewhere operated by a religious organisation, particularly if you’re not religious. However, there are plenty of people who love staying here.

Although it isn’t the most attractive part of London, the hotel grounds are lovely and there are local shops and restaurants within a short walk as well as access to some lovely waterfront footpaths that will take you to Wapping and Canary Wharf.

It is also well connected to public transport with Limehouse station only a four-minute walk away followed by a 6–7-minute ride into The City. Limehouse station has eight trains per hour to Fenchurch Street, six trains per hour to Tower Gateway and 15 trains per hour to Bank.

Free car parking is available as part of your room rate in most instances (although it is best to call and check first), which makes it one of the most centrally located accommodation options in London to offer free parking.
